Organisation and Structure

Currently, the Advisory side of the Attorney General's Office is divided into five functional groups. Each group consists of between seven to nine Advisory Counsel II and Advisory Counsel III, coordinated by an Advisory Counsel I. Advisory Counsel specialise in the areas of law assigned to a significant degree. This is in accordance with the Office's Statement of Strategy which has as a key objective "deliver a specialist legal advisory service".

Aside from the five functional groups in the Attorney General Office, a number of Advisory Counsel are assigned on secondment to Government Departments and Offices where they serve as "in-house" legal advisers.

An Advisory Counsel is also assigned on secondment as Legal Counsellor to the Permanent Representation of Ireland to the European Union in Brussels. Advisory Counsel have from time to time been seconded to the European Commission, the Council of the European Union and the European Court of Human Rights.
